There's almost nothing about Veronica Lake available to read. It's a shame, because she was one of the few actual stars Hollywood has ever produced. Actors are plentiful. Performers with riveting on-screen magnetism are far rarer.Beyond that, her fall from grace was dramatic and ultimately quite public. One wants to know how and why. Tragedies are compelling.Miss Lake apparently dictated the book to Donald Bain. Perhaps it's unrealistic to expect her to have uncommon perspective on her personal demons. If she did, she may have handled them more effectively. One is forced to read between the lines in an attempt to understand how the biggest box office star in America wound up a cocktail waitress at the Martha Washington Hotel, and alone.One is also curious about her post-stardom life, and especially her relationship with her son, since the handful of chaotic anecdotes she relates take the reader aback.There's just enough revealed to make the reader realize there was far more not revealed. I can't blame her for wanting to maintain some dignity, and not sharing a probable avalanche of personal and family dysfunction. She'd been humiliated enough. But the book would have been more interesting if she had.You still get the idea. You can also feel the sadness she could never fully drown in alcohol.I suppose you, thus, can gain some insight into the subtext of dislocation, vulnerability and fragility her screen persona projected.For those interested in Miss Lake, this book is just about all there is. As such, it's worthwhile. It's actually pretty good. It'd be great if there was more, but it is what it is.
